Conflict of Interest Policy

Perramus. Journal of Semiotic Studies on Graphic and Visual Media adheres to the principles and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding conflicts of interest, in order to ensure transparency, impartiality, and integrity throughout the editorial process.

Definition

A conflict of interest refers to any personal, professional, academic, institutional, or financial relationship that could influence — or be perceived as influencing — the objectivity, critical judgment, or decision-making related to the evaluation and publication of a manuscript.

Conflicts of interest may be actual, potential, or perceived.

Responsibilities of Authors

Authors must disclose any relevant conflicts of interest that could affect the interpretation of their results or the conclusions of their work. Such disclosure should include:

  • Sources of funding or sponsorship;

  • Relevant institutional affiliations;

  • Professional or personal relationships that could create bias;

  • Prior involvement in projects or collaborations directly related to the submitted work.

If no conflicts of interest exist, authors must explicitly state that no conflicts are declared.

Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers must decline to evaluate a manuscript if:

  • They have a personal, professional, or academic relationship with the author(s);

  • They have recently collaborated with the author(s);

  • They are engaged in direct academic competition that may affect impartiality;

  • They believe they cannot provide an objective and unbiased assessment.

In such cases, reviewers must promptly inform the editorial team and withdraw from the review process.

Responsibilities of the Editorial Team

Editors must:

  • Refrain from handling manuscripts where a conflict of interest exists;

  • Delegate editorial responsibility to another qualified editor when necessary;

  • Ensure that editorial decisions are based solely on scholarly merit.

Management and Transparency

Declared conflicts of interest will be assessed by the editorial team and, where appropriate, may be disclosed in the published article.

If undisclosed conflicts are identified, the journal will act in accordance with COPE guidelines, which may include requesting clarifications, issuing corrections, or taking additional editorial measures as required.
